Open to Improvement
DeviantArt has never really been a parade of good advice for growing artists, but some particular “words of wisdom” are way more bothersome than others.

Yes. I was snapesnogger.
Yes I drew stupid weird things.
Yes I acted immaturely and refused criticism.
Yes, I DREW BADLY.
and Yes.This was YEARS ago.
I was what…17? 18? when most of the drama happened. I am now 24. I have done nothing but try to improve myself based on what people have told…
One day I’m going to see people asking about my artwork and the first response won’t be a redirect to the various hate blogs dedicated to me.
Goodness me, Preston. Recently, you seem to be getting yourself into a bit of a mess.
You’ve made people very upset, what with being an ‘informative’ wet blanket, and announcing anime as being similar, and now you’re providing people with redlines which didn’t actually contribute meaningful corrections. That is, a vast majority of your corrections are (ironically) incorrect. (your redline indicated that Wonderwoman only has one leg and a really flat right arse, she’s also floating. her neck is far too long. I like how you didn’t even try to correct the hands.)
It’s only fair that people mess you up if you try to do the same to them.
So please, your little pity posts about how you can’t sleep, how everyone hates you etc really are just pathetic. If you were nicer, people would like you.
Oh, just a little literature sort of pointer, stop using the same expression for the same thing over and over again. Your “knee-jerk” motif is getting a little old.
I’m not a doctor, but might I recommend you remedy your… issues with some art? I find drawing away one’s frustrations to be very cathartic.
I see this whole thing with Preston being all “OH WOMEN CAN BE KISSED AGAINST THEIR WILL IF CONTEXT” and I’m thinking I should kiss Tom Preston against his will and see how he likes it.
Except I wouldn’t want to do that.
Any volunteers?
Oh.
Dear.
Lord.
Yeah, that’s right.
Stay out of our fucking fandom.
We don’t want your abominations here.
YOU YOU CANT JUST YOU CANT
I really don’t get the hate. :/ I’m not like his number one fangirl or anything, but he’s really not a bad artist, and I think his comics are kind of funny.
Though I’m curious when Transformers, of all fandoms, started having a ‘you can’t be in this fandom’ list, considering all the bull that is actually accepted around here. Honestly, Tom Preston getting into it is far from the worst thing that would happen to this fandom.
No, it is definitely the worst, and he is a terrible artist.
I admit that the guy kinda has style but he doesnt know how to line/colour for shit it seems beccause it looks BAD, and there’s something i really dislike generally about comic/deviant/ect/popular artists leeching onto fandoms for a contest that is normally for the fans so they can win something when they’ve never taken an interest in the thing before and (from this picture) dont know shit about it other than the generalization and then expect to win and get prizes that are normally for the fans of said show (this goes for any fandom) that’s me personally i guess.
i just hate preston-he’s annoying, self important and his comics suck
but yes, i agree on the contest part to-it would be different(maybe) if he were already in the fandom, but joining a fandom just to take part in a contest is stupid, and if you’re popular why bother???
Contests help you become known-even just slightly-so why bother taking part in one if you’re already known by alot of people 8I
Is this a bad time to mention there was never a transformers contest, I never entered one, and that the bad drawing of the transformer was intentional as the “joke?”
I’m also fascinated by people who say “stay out of our fandoms” like they own them or something, or that I’m not allowed to enjoy current pop culture content like every other human being is. I do have a life outside my mediocre Internet celebrityism ya know…
So you lied about the contest. Well. Okay. That’s fine. We all make stuff up sometimes just so we can tell a joke better. Yeah. No. What a twist.
I’m loathe to inform you of your own interests, but you hate Transformers. According to this comic http://tompreston.deviantart.com/gallery/?q=hate#/d380n8i as well as judging by your riveting commentary, “Transformers; I never got into this as a kid. I don’t really like cars, or giant robots. So I just never understood why it was so popular. And don’t get me started on the crappy movies…”
Unless of course, the next twist is that you made up your dislike of Transformers in order to make that joke, or perhaps you changed your opinion since then. Imagine an eyeroll here.
Let’s clear this up, you lied about something you didn’t need to lie about and then drew that ugly… thing because you can’t draw fanart of a franchise you’ve told people that you hate, but may actually like. That was the joke, wasn’t it? I think we found the joke.
Nonetheless, I hope you’re enjoying your time as an internet celebrity.
Can you not tell the difference between making up a story and lying? The vast majority of the SYAC comics featuring my likeness never had any basis in real life. They were made up instances for the purpose of telling a joke. Sometimes they might have real life references, but for the most part… they were all made up. It’s a cartoon and was never meant to be a journal comic in any shape or form. I’ve said this multiple times.
Yeah you’re right. I don’t really like Transformers. I didn’t grow up with them as a kid, so I have no real sentimental attachment to them now. But that doesn’t mean that if push came to shove I couldn’t draw them. The weak doodle above is a joke and is meant to look like crap. It’s a classic “guy is overconfident but gets his comeuppance” setup. It could’ve been ANY fandom, I just happened to settle on Transformers. It is not me “venting” about my “hatred” for them.
There was never anything sinister about this strip. Never anything worthy of so much anger and hate. It’s just a joke making fun of the fact that Transformers are generally harder to draw than other things. There is no deep set meaning, no nastiness that needs to be spilled over it aside from what you try to artificially put there.
What worries me about you, and people like you, is that you can’t seem to tell the difference between reality and make believe.
I actually did point out that you lied and made up the stupid Transformers contest. In the process you used Transformers to make a half arsed, poorly thought out joke.
Preston, victimising is not a joke.
Making yourself look like the victim is not the joke.
Making it look as if the entire world is raining shit on you, is not a joke.
Making a terrible drawing/comic/joke of a great franchise is a joke.
If you’re going to disrespect an awesome franchise, then you’re going to have to deal with people disrespecting you. It’s the internet, we take our fandoms seriously.
Sadly, you seem rather uninformed about Transformers. Perhaps if you think Transformers are hard to draw then take a look at newer reincarnations of them. That is: Transformers Animated and Rescue Bots. Not only do they simplify Transformer anatomy, they also demonstrate a fluidity and elegance of 2D animation that you sorely lack (and should have, since y’know… YOU’RE A CARTOONIST LOL. and BFA in animation and whatnot).
So don’t cry about how I didn’t get the joke. Because whatever you consider a joke in that strip, obviously was not very funny to me (as well as a lot of others). So instead of telling me that I’m delusional, how about you learn from your experience and watch some good fucking animation. And learn from the animation, that’s the most important thing.
(Because I saw your recent ghost animation gif. It was bad. You need a few more frames in between your meagre amount of frames for it to work at all (I don’t even DO animation and I can see this). The Slenderman comic animation was also bad.)
(I also never said you were “venting” your “hatred” for them, stop putting words into my mouth, you silly man. Putting quotation marks everywhere won’t make you sound more informed. Nor did I imply that your comic was sinister, that would be giving you too much credit. I just thought it was stupid.)
(I am not sure if you can block someone on Tumblr, but if you’re sad enough, you can try to block DamnitTomPreston.)
Oh. Also.
“But that doesn’t mean that if push came to shove I couldn’t draw them.”
Please, by all accounts, don’t let me stop you. Proceed. You prove you can seriously try to draw Transformers, and you earn the respect you’ve been so dying to have.
And don’t try to back out of it because I know you’re reading this. And please, do not try to justify that I’ll hate your drawing anyway. Because I won’t. Because a long time ago I used to like your art because I could tell you put a lot of love and effort into it.
So for god’s sake put some effort into it. I wish you all the luck.
I’m someone who finds the value in tough love, and despite what the internet has said, has actually never lost hope in redemption. I’ll make fun of you, I’ll hate you and your art but I still think you can become a better person and artist, as can we all.
So push has come to shove, Preston, I’m holding you to your word.
“I don’t like anime because it all looks the same.”
Possibly one of the number one things anyone could say that irritates me.
It’s okay to not like things, it’s okay to not like anime, but don’t throw this bullshit at me. (All official art; series names are in the captions)‘fraid I don’t agree. Yes, on a purely logical and technical standpoint, ALL anime is different and drawn with a specific style and methodology in mind. Just as all Disney animation is drawn differently to reflect the story and art designs…
But on a more global scale, the vast vast VAST similarities the various styles have come together and yield a more universally recognizable style. Big eyes, small mouths, colorful hair, cute characters, schoolgirls, robots, etc. Add in the various recycled tropes and cliches that Anime and Manga alike keep reusing over and over and over again, and after a while… it’s very easy to lump everything together into one category.
Again, just like Disney. We have more than 1 animation studio here in America, but how often have you heard people lump a Dreamworks or Warner Bros animated film in with the Disney brand? How often have you heard someone say “I loved that Disney movie Iron Giant!” or “Anastasia was my favorite Disney film as a kid!”
If I can accept that people are going to lump non-Disney films into the Disney style and brand because “it all looks the same” then you can accept that people not interested or appreciative of Anime will lump all the various series into the same generalized category too.
Oh my god Tom Preston get the fuck off of my post
>but how often have you heard people lump a Dreamworks or Warner Bros animated film in with the Disney brand?
But people do lump Dreamworks/Disney films into the same category. You seriously haven’t heard people refer to animated films in general as “Disney”?
>Big eyes, small mouths, colorful hair, cute characters, schoolgirls, robots, etc.
Oh man this is good.
>big eyesTake a look at a Miyazaki film. Not all anime is BIG EYE UGUU~
>colorful hair
That’s a “trope” in just about every form of animation. The funny thing about animating is that you can express things that you can’t in live action.>cute characters
You cannot be serious.
>schoolgirls, robots, etc.
So two common characteristics in an a broad medium represent the entertainment as a whole? Let’s talk about how videogames are about shooting and webcomics are self-referential.
I understand that you don’t like anime, and I don’t have a problem with that. But being this wrong and expecting people to take you seriously when you just toss around buzzwords is pretty immature and makes you look bad as an artist.
You didn’t really rebuke anything there, though… You just re listed the same things I already said.
Also, I generalized on purpose by adding etc. it should be common sense that if someone says etc then they include stuff they don’t have time to elaborate on. That’s what etc means.
About the big eye thing… Just accept it. Yes there are exceptions. Yes Miyazaki films don’t typically feature stereotypical animelike styles… But those are the exceptions, and they’re called exceptions for a reason. Because I could grab 10 random anime off my DVD collection and ill bet you 9 out of 10 feature big big eyes. It’s not “wrong” to point out that anime characters tend to feature big eyes, and you are not being insightful by pointing out exceptions.
Finally, I don’t hate anime and manga. I hate the defensive mentality that feels compelled to blindly argue in its favor and decry those who objectively look at the big picture.
The vast majority of Anime looks the same to the untrained eye. The reason you can tell the difference is because you’re knee deep in it and know better. People who say “I don’t like anime, it’s all the same” don’t know all the gradations like you do.
Could you not argue on my post.
I only made this post because it’s kind of a dick move to hate on things that you don’t know anything about in the first place.
Which you’re kind of restating anyways. You’re saying people hate on anime because they don’t know anything about it. AKA Ignorance, talking about something without actually learning about it, etc. Nobody likes that kind of attitude no matter what the subject is.Nobody likes that attitude, of course. But complaining doesn’t exactly solve it. It’s basically just being a dick in response to a problem rather than trying to confront and understand said problem.
It’s not my job to walk around educating people on anime. It’s peoples job not to open their mouths and talk about something they have zero knowledge on. It’s a super polite mannerism I like to refer to as not being a dickwad.
If you’re not going to educate, then don’t complain about it. The problem will only persist until education comes along to correct people. Bitching that it pisses you off while then decrying you have no intention of trying to fix it is really superficial.
If someone doesn’t know what they’re talking about but they decide to talk about it anyways, it’s called being ignorant. It clearly doesn’t have anything to do with how much anime they have watched or not, or how much they know about anime, because I have seen people who don’t watch any anime at all say contrary. It’s a matter of the character of the person.
Your argument basically boils down to “It’s not peoples fault if they act like jerks. We need to help them not be jerks. They can’t help it. You’re being a meanie by calling them out on it. Why aren’t you helping them to understand instead?” I’ve placed 9 different series’ up here that I think have very distinct styles. Some came out years apart, some were released very close to each other. That is my proof against the argument. That is my contribution to teaching these people otherwise. Please stop telling me I am ‘bitching’ as you so eloquently put it, when it’s basically the initial thing I did.Being ignorant isn’t the same as being a jerk, so don’t treat them the same. People who dislike anime and lump series together are ignorant, but they aren’t saying it to you to be a jerk. Therein lies the “bitchiness” I was referring to. Treating people without knowledge as something beneath you and being angry at them for not understanding what you know.
You don’t solve the problem that way, which is why I disagreed with your post.
I’m done now though. Contrary to popular belief I dislike arguing, and from my understanding you’re one of the people who actively dislikes me and my work (which makes my response to this post even more unfortunate) and I’d really rather not drag this out any longer.
I’ve said my piece. Sorry it caused such a commotion.
Wow Andrew. Can you be any more of a dick?
I told myself to lay off the Preston hating for a while because I thought you were -trying- to improve your art/attitude as you’ve said several times (after blocking me), and because I have better things to do.
But seriously, I am offended that you cannot see what utter rudeness you have shown toward this person… starting an argument, stating illogical ‘facts’, being stubborn, being pedantic and completely. uninformed.
I am sorry! I can no longer tell myself that you will ever be a nice person.
Picking fights on Tumblr over anime? (the original post which wasn’t addressing you at all) Seriously.
Fuck. man. I’d forgive you if your argument at least made sense. It didn’t.
I am a firm believer that everyone gets what they deserve. And you, Tom Preston, deserve single hateful thought or comment or parody artwork directed at you. You deserve every ‘nice’ comment you get from young idiots who like you because they don’t know any better. You brought this disrespect upon yourself. Stop playing the victim in your silly little imagination.
Take some responsibility for your actions.
Or you don’t have to. You can simply blog some sad little sob story about how you’re so misunderstood a-bloo-bloo-bloo, or write a journal about how you’re so sick from people being sick of your own sick douchebaggery that you can hardly reach across the table for some fries, or maybe pretend that you’re the mature one here and I’m the one getting worked up about nothing and making all these assumptions.
But realise, that you were a huuuuuge dick to a stranger who meant you no harm.
How about we play a game, Preston? You stop being such a disrespectful child and man up: the hate will stop.
You keep being disrespectful and continue to act like a manchild: the hate won’t stop, and it never will.
Remember: we all get what we deserve.
That is a fact.

Tom Preston… How do I begin to explain Tom Preston?
Tom Preston is flawless.
I hear his baldness is insured for $10,000.
I hear he does blimp commercials… in Japan.
His favorite movie is the shooting prior to the Dark Knight Rises.
One time he met Christopher Hart on a plane…
And he told him he was a great cartoonist.
One time someone sprayed him in the face… it was awesome.
Recently Preston’s been drawing backgrounds.
How.
This.
We’ll have some redlines up from our resident expert 12 year old drawer. Since he still can’t grasp what a chin is.

Just stick around. Or look at the Tom Preston tag. It’s full of negativity, and with good reason.
